Oklahoma governor stays execution of Richard Glossip

(Vatican Radio) The governor of Oklahoma, Mary Fallin, has issued a stay of execution in the case of Richard Glossip - who was scheduled to die on Wednesday - after prison officials said one of the three drugs they had received to carry out the lethal injection did not match state guidelines.

Listen:

Glossip was convicted of ordering the 1997 killing of Barry Van Treese, who owned the Oklahoma City motel that Glossip managed, but has always maintained his innocence.

Pope Francis has sent a request for clemency in the case through his Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò. The request said clemency would give a “clearer witness to the value and dignity of every person’s life and would contribute to a society more cognizant of the mercy that God has bestowed upon all of us.”
