Three killed in mine protests in Peru


(Vatican Radio) Three people have died and more than 20 have been injured during clashes over a massive copper mining project in the Andean region of Peru. Peru's President Ollanta Humala is calling for dialogue, after 15,000 protesters battled police.

Trouble flared when some protesters attempted to enter the mine, which is owned by Chinese-owned company.

Tear gas rounds and then live ammunition were used against demonstrators.  Peru's Minister of the Interior Jose Luis Perez said police were being attacked and had to defend themselves.
