National Congress on Consecrated Life in Kenya

Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, João Cardinal Bráz de Aviz is in Nairobi, for the National Congress on Consecrated Life which started on 23 September – to 26 September 2015. The national congress is taking place at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

On 22 September Cardinal Bráz de Aviz celebrated Holy Mass with the cloistered nuns of Kenya from 16 different Monasteries at Subiaco Centre for Spirituality in Nairobi. The Cardinal interacted with the cloistered nuns of Kenya before meeting Kenyan Bishops and Major Superiors of religious congregations at the Dimesse Spirituality Centre in Karen, Nairobi.

Cloistered nuns are entirely dedicated to praying for the Church. They live a contemplative and cloistered life of meditation, work and prayer for the salvation of others. The Mass with the Cardinal was therefore a unique opportunity for the cloistered nuns to meet other nuns from all over the country. The last time the congregations came together was 20 years ago during the visit of Pope Saint John Paul II.

The National Congress on Consecrated Life which started on 23 September has been characterized by inputs from selected speakers and discussions around the theme, “Consecrated Life in Africa Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.”

The National congress was organised by the Commission for the Clergy and Religious of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), Tangaza University College, the Association of Sisterhoods of Kenya (AOSK), and the Religious Superiors’ Conference of Kenya (RSCK).
