Guantanamo Bishop: Mood of hope in Cuba thanks to Pope

(Vatican Radio) The Bishop of Guantanamo-Baracoa said thanks to Pope Francis there is a mood of hope in Cuba concerning the new possibilities of dialogue with the United States. The assessment by Bishop Wilfredo Pino Estevez came in a message released two weeks before the papal visit to Cuba from September 19th to 22nd. Bishop Estevez recalled the Holy See’s mediation in the negotiations leading up to the restoration of diplomatic relations between Washington and Havana and described the Pope Francis’ mediation as “very important” in the search for reconciliation and peace between the two peoples.

The Cuban bishop noted that along with Brazil, his homeland will become the only two nations in the world to have the privilege of being visited by three Popes, namely, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and now Pope Francis.

Turning to the motto of the papal visit “Missionary of Mercy,” the bishop of Guantanamo reminded Cubans that showing mercy is not a choice but an imperative to help combat the widespread ills of today’s world. These ills, he said, can be moral, spiritual, social, intellectual and material.

Bishop Estevez concluded his message by urging the people of Cuba to strive to become better people and not allow themselves to be defeated by evil.
