Amidst fear and exhaustion Ebola is still not completely under control

Some 16 months since the epidemic outbreak, Ebola is still not under control.

New cases of Ebola reported in Liberia and Guinea are spreading anxiety. Agenzia Fides quotes Medecins sans frontiers (MSF) which is Doctors without borders as saying that in spite of remarkable progress to reduce infections, Ebola is still present in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Agenzia Fides says that in Guinea Conakry the virus’ transmission chain is still active in the capital Conakry, Boké as well as in Forecariah. Nevertheless the numbers are not as alarming as when Ebola was at its peak in November 2014. But they are still a great source of concern.  In the past 8 weeks alone the number of new cases in the entire West Africa region stood at 30 new cases.

In Guinea Conakry, awareness campaigns are continuing. The aim is to spread awareness and also to counter wrong information, fear and exhaustion among the people. Medecins sans frontiers is working in a new centre at Nongo, where patients are able to receive plasma donated by persons who have recovered from Ebola.

To meet a recent Ebola outbreak in Boké, north Guinea, MSF opened a new centre for Ebola treatment on 3 July.
