Arcbhishop Mpundu evacuated to South Africa for treatment

Zambia’s Republican President Edgar Lungu on Monday ordered the evacuation of Lusaka’s Archbishop, Telesphore-George Mpundu to South Africa for specialist treatment. This is according to the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) which quoted the President’s special assistant for press and public relations, Amos Chanda.

“His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has ordered the evacuation of the Archbishop of Lusaka Telesphore Mpundu to South Africa for specialist treatment and His Grace, the Archbishop has since arrived in South Africa,” Chanda told ZNBC

Archbishop Mpundu was first admitted to the country’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH) a week ago. According Zambian media, the Archbishop almost collapsed after administering the Sacrament of Confirmation at one of the parishes on the periphery of the city of Lusaka.

The Archbishop was said to be suffering from acute high blood pressure.

On Wednesday last week, UTH managing director Dr Lackson Kasonka told media, in Lusaka, that Archbishop Mpundu was responding well to treatment and was due to be discharged from hospital last Thursday.
