Mexico offers reward for capture of escaped drug lord

(Vatican Radio) Mexico is offering a 3.8 million dollar reward for information leading to the capture of its most-wanted drug lord, who escaped a top-security prison over the weekend.

Listen to Ann Schneible’s report:

Mexico’s interior minister says authorities likely colluded with drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to enable his escape from a maximum security.

Guzman sparked a massive manhunt after escaping from Altiplano prison on Saturday night in a mile-long underground tunnel that led from his cell into a deserted building.

Owing to the complexity of the tunnel through which the drug lord escaped, security experts say must have had help on a grand scale.

Interior minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said Monday he had fired the head of the prison along with two other officials.

El Chapo was one of the world's most notorious crime bosses, running the powerful Sinaloa Cartel for years, with an estimated 1 billion dollars in personal wealth.

This is the drug-lord’s second escape from a high security lockup in less than 15 years.
