Polls show Greek referendum swinging to 'Yes'

(Vatican Radio)  Two days before Greeks get to vote in a referendum on whether to accept or reject the creditors’ latest terms for a Greek bailout, polls show a small lead by the acceptance party, or the ‘yes.’

Listen to the report by John Carr:

According to the surveys, the 'yeses' account for 45 percent of the electorate, with the 'noes' – among whom are Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his Syriza government – at around 43 percent and the 'still undecided' at 12 percent.

All of which makes for a classic cliff-hanger on Sunday, when turnout is expected to be high.

The closeness of the run indicates that Tsipras will likely not get a clear public endorsement of his aggressive independence of Brussels and Greece’s creditors.  He has indicated he will resign if the referendum goes against him.

Meanwhile, Greece’s banks remain closed for the fifth day, with some uncertainty about when, or whether, they will open next week.  There are still long queues outside ATMs, which dispense just 60 euros a day, while pensioners have to stand in line for hours to get double that amount for the week.

All of which has helped swell the ‘yes to Europe’ campaign.
