Mongu Diocese responds to Church of South Sudan Appeal

The Bishop of Mongu Diocese in Zambia, Evans Chinyama Chinyemba, has said that although his diocese maybe geographically distant from South Sudan, “We are neighbours to each other even when we are separated by political boundaries.”

Bishop Chinyemba said, this week, that the Diocese of Mongu has demonstrated this neighborliness by responding to an appeal made by the regional body of Bishops in Eastern Africa, AMECEA, (Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) to various episcopal Conferences, to mobilise financial resources for the Church of South Sudan.

The Bishop has since thanked various parishes, rectories and religious houses for contributing towards the solidarity fund, “May I take this opportunity to thank the following parishes for generously responding to this appeal: Holy Spirit, St. Agatha, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. John, St. Gabriel. Furthermore, I thank the following parish houses: Holy Spirit, and Our Lady of Lourdes and the religious communities of Jack Joyce Oblate Community and Malengwa Capuchin Friars’ house. The following female religious congregations responded generously: The Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate communities at Moya O kenile and Limulunga, The Presentations Sisters’ communities of Mongu, Kaoma and Lusaka, the Handmaid Sisters in Mongu and Senanga, the Incarnate Word Sisters, the Little Servants of Mary Immaculate at Nalwei, the Loreto Sisters in Lukulu, and the Holy Cross Sisters of Sepo and Bernarda convents,” Bishop Chinyemba said.

Others that the Bishop thanked include institutions that made their contributions: Caritas-Mongu, St. Columba (Lukulu) and Holy Cross Vocational Institute. The Bishop said that funds raised have been remitted to the Zambia Episcopal Conference through Caritas Zambia for onward transmission to AMECEA and later to the Church of South Sudan.

“To each one of you and the communities and departments you represent, I thank you,” Bishop Chinyemba concluded.
