Fr. Czerny praises launch of Laudato si’

A member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and advisor to Cardinal Peter Turkson, Father Michael F. Czerny has expressed satisfaction with the launch of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato si’. Speaking to Vatican Radio after the launch, Fr. Czerny expressed satisfaction with the numerous participants who took time to attend the launch.

“Now that the encyclical is launched, I must admit that I am quite struck by the wonderful teamwork that goes back ever since Pope Francis has been mentioning the encyclical,” Fr. Czerny said. He pointed out that Pope Francis involved a variety of people in the preparation of the encyclical.  “And this is in itself a beautiful thing and a beautiful sign,” he added.

While on the plane flying to Manila, Pope Francis mentioned that Cardinal Turkson and his team prepared the first draft and then several other people were later consulted.

Fr Czerny was particularly happy that Laudato si’ is not just like any other document. He said, Pope Francis, “does not leave us with a text but with a challenge of how to live differently, of how to pray differently, how to work differently, and how to be happy differently and this is a wonderful challenge for each and every one of us.”

Fr. Czerny praised Cardinal Turkson’s presentation and overview of the whole encyclical at the launch. He also spoke highly of the spiritual and theological reading of the encyclical by the Metropolitan of Pergamo, John Zizioulas who represented the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Orthodox Church.

Fr Czerny further commended the acclaimed German climate scientist and professor, Hans Joachim Schellnhuber for giving the launch an up-to-date insight of scientific issues. An Italian school teacher also spoke at the event. The school teacher, Valeria Martano who lives and works on the out skirts of Rome, talked about the suffering of the people caused by the degradation of the environment in her area.

A great number of leaders of organisations and journalists from across the world witnessed the launch of the encyclical.
