Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

(Vatican Radio) Jailed Venezuelan opposition Leader Leopoldo Lopez has called for a massive but peaceful nationwide strike this coming Saturday against the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

Listen to the report by correspondent James Blears:

In a  filmed message leaked from jail, Leopoldo Lopez is demanding the release of all political prisoners, an end of censorship and a date for elections.  He is also calling for a nationwide peaceful protest this coming Saturday.

Leopoldo Lopez was arrested in February 2014 at a rally, and he is being held in the Ramo Verde Military Prison on the outskirts of the capital, Caracas.

He is charged with inciting violence during last year's month long protests, in which more than 40 people died.
