Rescue efforts underway after latest quake in Nepal

(Vatican Radio) Officials in towns affected by the latest earthquake in Nepal called on residents Wednesday to evacuate damaged buildings. The orders came a day after the country was hit by a magnitude-7.3 quake.Tuesday's tremor killed at least 65 people, and  injured nearly 2,000.

It also hampered relief efforts causing landslides that blocked roads and slowed the delivery of supplies.

Many people, afraid to stay indoors  spent Tuesday night in tents or under plastic tarps.

Sudarshan Shrestha is Director of Media and Communication for Save the Children’s programme in Nepal, he says there is a great deal of fear among the people.

“Since yesterday a lot of people have been camping outside of their residence in fear of another aftershock coming”.

Speaking about what those affected really need right now, Mr Sudarshan said providing shelter and water is a priority. “We are trying to ensure that people get relief materials mainly shelter… in addition to that sanitation is a serious problem because of now water…”

Experts say that Tuesday’s earthquake was significantly less powerful than the quake which struck on April 25th that killed more than 8.150 people. But it was enough to send shockwaves across parts of Asia.

In India, at least 16 people were confirmed dead after rooftops or walls collapsed onto them, and Chinese media reported one death in Tibet.
