Amtrak Passenger Train derails in US

(Vatican Radio) An Amtrak passenger train with 238 passengers on board derailed in north Philadelphia Tuesday night, killing five people and injuring dozens others, several of them critically.

Listen to the report by Devin Watkins:

Authorities said they had no idea what caused the train wreck.

Train 188, a Northeast Regional, was headed to New York City from Washington, D.C. when it suddenly decelerated and derailed, turning on its side and tearing the cars apart.

Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia arrived at the scene to act as liason with the media.

`It is a devastating scene down there,'' he said. ``We walked the entire length of the train area, and the engine completely separated from the rest of the train, and one of the cars is perpendicular to the rest of the cars. It's unbelievable.''
