The Cougar Helicopter, a medium multi-mission helicopter, was carrying 18 people on an anti-drugs mission, when it came under heavy sustained fire from a cluster of vehicles below. Three soldiers were killed, while ten solders and two Federal Policemen were wounded during the immediate emergency landing. The wounded were then rushed to Guadalajara Regional Military Hospital for treatment.

In response to the attack, helicopters and Army patrols were deployed to hunt for the gunmen. Abandoned vehicles have been found during an initial search, but there have been no reports of any arrests at present. So far no drug cartel has claimed responsibility for the attack, during which high calibre weapons were used. The incident clearly demonstrates the deadly firepower available for use by Mexican organized crime.  Many of the firearms are illicitly smuggled in to the country, especially from the United States, often in exchange for narcotics.
