New Vice Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs University installed


Prof. Fr. John Chrysostom Maviiri has been installed as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), Nkozi, in a colourful ceremony held at  the main Campus. This is according to the “New Contact” online magazine of the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC), made available to Vatican Radio by the Bishops' Conference’s Secretary for Communication, Fr. Philip Odii.

The installation ceremony of Prof. Maviiri was presided over by the Chancellor, Archbishop John Baptist Odama, who is the Archbishop of Gulu and Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC). Prof. Maviiri takes over from Prof. Charles Olweny who retired earlier this year.

“I’m taking responsibility when the institution is 22 years-old. I have fully accepted the responsibilities and I promise to do my best,” Prof Maviiri said after his installation. “I will do my best to take Uganda Martyrs University to a higher level and will also turn our challenges into opportunities,” he continued. Prof. Maviiri also expressed gratitude towards the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olweny for the wonderful work during his tenure as a VC at the institution.

In his installation speech, Archbishop Odama tasked Prof. Maviiri with the duty of taking UMU to a higher level. the Archbishop noted that, “Though corruption, drug addiction, abortion, unemployment prevail in Uganda, the Vice-chancellor together with the management of the university should be the watchdog of God and the country.” He further called upon Prof. Maviiri to inculcate into the students the ethose, norms, values and customs of the Catholic Church as he performs his duties and responsibilities at the University.

The function was attended by several dignitaries including the Archbishop of Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, the Bishop of Masaka, John Baptist Kaggwa, the Bishop of Lugazi, Christopher Kakooza, the Bishop of Fort Portal, Robert Muhiirwa, the retired Bishop of Fort-Portal, Paul Kalanda and the UEC Secretary General, Msgr. John Baptist Kauta.

Several priests, religious brothers and sisters from various congregations and members of the laity including officials from the Central government were also present.

Uganda Martyrs University was first led by Prof. Michel Lejuene of Belgium, who handed over to Prof. Olweny of Tororo Diocese. Prof. Fr. Maviiri was ordained priest on 29 November 1981. He holds a doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from Urbaniana University in Rome, among other credentials. He was previously the Vice-chancellor of the Kenya-based Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) from 2002 to 2011.
