Kenya - Coadjutor Bishop Joseph Alessandro speaks to us about the situation in Garissa

Garissa County in the northeastern region of Kenya has been making headlines lately following three brutal attacks by Al Shabaab militants. The most recent one was during Holy Week earlier this month, when militants stormed the university campus in Garissa city killing close to 150 people.

Pope Francis met with the bishops of Kenya on Thursday in the Vatican as they mark their ad Limina visit. In prepared remarks, he remembered those killed in that terror attack and in other such attacks across the country. He said, “With you, I pray for all those who have been killed by acts of terror or ethnic or tribal hostilities in Kenya as well as other areas of the continent.  I think most especially of the men and women killed at Garissa University College on Good Friday. May their souls rest in peace and their loved ones be consoled, and may those who commit such brutality come to their senses and seek mercy.”

Before the meeting with the Pope Thursday, the Coadjutor Bishop of Garissa Joseph Alessandro came to our studios and spoke to Festus Tarawalie about the situation on the ground.
