High expectations for possible US-Cuba sit-down in Panama

(Vatican Radio) Rulers could be meeting on the margins at the Summit of the Americas in Panama and there are high expectations for a sit down between Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro that would be a measure of REAL progress to end a more than half century of sustained emnity.

Listen to the report by James Blears

Thirty five nations from North, Central and South America are together at the Summit of the Americas in Panama, but the get together which would be historic would star Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro.

US Officials have tantaliziingly created a pot boiler stating that although there's no formal meeting planned.... the big two might have an opportunity to "Meet on the Margins."

That would provide an opportunity to extend perameters.

A lifting of the so called US Total Trade Embargo would be historic and an incredible step forward.

But perhaps more modest progress can be hoped for.

In Mid December Havana and Washington announced they were starting to work towards normalizing diplomatic relations.

Yet no Ambassadors have yet been exchanged.

Many commentators are hoping that the famous handshake between the two at Nelson Mandela's funeral in 2013, can be entended and prolonged into something more fruitful.

We've got just two days within which to find out.
