Typhoon Maysak approaches the Philippines after devastating Micronesia

(Vatican Radio) Filipino authorities have evacuated around 24,000 people from the country’s north-eastern province of Aurora in anticipation of Typhoon Maysak’s arrival on Sunday.

Typhoon Maysak was upgraded to a Super Typhoon after it devastated the Federated States of Micronesia in the Pacific on Wednesday, killing 5.  In Chuuk State many of the tin houses experienced significant damage with up to 95% of the houses being destroyed.  Local crop plantations have also been destroyed, threating the livelihood of many of the island’s inhabitants, as well as sinking many of the local boats used for fishing.  After devastating the Pacific nation, winds reached up to 260 kilometres an hour, but have since decreased.

The Filipino authorities however are taking no chances, and have put the entire military, numbering 120,000 on full alert.  Smaller boats have been pulled ashore and tourists have been advised to stay in their hotels and avoid the shores.  The last super-Typhoon to hit the Philippines, Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), killed over 7,000 people in later 2013.
