Bishop of Krishnagar speaks about nun's rape case in his diocese

The rape of an elderly nun during an attack on a Catholic school run by the Religious of Jesus and Mary (RJM) in eastern India’s West Bengal state, has once more focused on the growing problem of utter disrespect for women’s dignity and rights in India.  In the early hours of March 14, robbers broke into the Jesus and Mary School in Ranaghat, in Nadia District, and inflicted physical violence on the nuns, including the rape of an over 70-year old nun and the desecration of consecrated hosts, India’s Catholic bishops have said.  The rape victim is recovering in hospital.

Catholic institutions and the parish of Ranaghat comes under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Krishnagar, the district headquarters, some 30 kms. away.   Vatican Radio contacted Bishop Joseph Suren Gomes of Krishnagar at the Bishop’s House on Monday, soon after he visited the raped nun and the community of Religious of Jesus and Mary in Ranaghat.  Sunday evening a big rally with a candle-lit procession was held in Krishnagar City in solidarity with the nuns and in protest against the violence.  We first asked Bishop Gomes how he found the elderly nun in hospital.
