A serious food crisis is looming in Madagscar

In Madagascar, the threat of a serious food crisis is growing day by day. The country is said to be facing an unusual drought. A lengthy drought has left people struggling to find food in southern Madagascar. According to authorities in this Indian Ocean island, the regions of Androy and Anosy in the southeast of the country are most affected.

The United Nation's (UN) Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) says that perhaps, "as much as 40 percent of crops in southern Madagascar are at risk" because of drought, cyclones and a locust plague.

The drought effectively started in November. Various teams of experts are said to be in the affected regions with the view to assess the scale of the problem and ascertain the kind of emergency intervention needed.
