Lateran Pacts effect


(Vatican Radio ) February 11, 2015 marks 86 years since the signing of the Lateran Pacts betwen Italy and the Holy See. Veronica Scarisbrick asks Jesuit historian Gerald Fogarty, who teaches at the University of Virginia in the United States to shed light on this historical milestone which among other things produced the 'Concordat'.

Father Fogarty explains how the word 'Concordat' may be  foreign to English speakers simply because no such thing exists in countries where common law is applied. Whereas in Roman law, he adds, it represents an agreement to guarantee the rights of the Church within a particular country.
