March for Life USA: every life is a gift

(Vatican Radio) The 42nd March for Life took place in Washington, DC, yesterday, on the anniversary of the 1973 decision of the US Supreme Court in the case of Roe v. Wade, which made procured abortion legal throughout the entire United States.

A great crowd of a size estimated in the hundreds of thousands marched to the Supreme Court building from which the decision came more than four decades ago carrying the message:  Every Life is a Gift, and calling on national leaders to give legal protection to the innocent, weakest and most vulnerable in society.

Addressing the faithful gathered for Mass on the morning of the March, at the end of an all-night prayer vigil, the President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops,  Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, Ky., called on all participants to be patient and joyful witnesses to the Gospel in all areas of life, and especially to be urged the marchers to be compassionate with people who disagree with them or who have experienced abortion. “We do not know what Christ will call us to do,” said Archbsihop Kurtz, “but we are sure of this: every one of us will be called to do something special.”

These were all themes Archbishop Kurtz discussed in a message posted on his blog in the run-up to the March. “Standing up for life definitely takes patience, endurance, and commitment,” he wrote.

Since the Roe v. Wade decision, more than 56 million children’s lives have been lost to abortion. The US Conference  of Catholic Bishops is calling on Catholics and pesons of good will to join in an ongoing effort of prayerfor the creation and flourishing of a culture of life throughout the nation, with a special novena for life underway from January 17th to January 25th.
