Diplomatic talks begin between the United States and Cuba

(Vatican Radio) Historic talks are underway in Havana between Cuban and US officials to try and heal a 50-year rift between the  two countries.

Listen to the report by correspondent James Blears:

Last month, President Barack Obama delivered a speech urging a normalization of relations, and on Tuesday night, even called for an end to the embargo imposed after Fidel Castro turned the island Communist in the early 1960’s.

President Raul Castro cautiously welcomed this opening, while underlining that the existing Cuban system remains.

Significantly, US diplomat Roberta Jacobson, with the portfolio for the Americas, is part of these talks, making it the most important bi-lateral meeting for more than thirty years. The first step would be restoring full diplomatic relations, with ambassadors at full status embassies in both capitals.
