European Bishops conclude meeting in Esztergom


(Vatican Radio) Presidents and superiors of the doctrinal committees of the European bishops’ conferences and congregations concluded their threeday meeting in Esztergom in northern Hungary.

Starting the meeting, Cardinal Gerhard Müller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, read the message Pope Francis sent to participants.

In his message the Pope welcomed the meeting convened to “evaluate the responsible role of local bishops’ conferences, and specifically their theology committees, in preserving the unity and integrity of the faith and passing it onto the young generation”.

Cardinal Müller said participants discussed the European Catholic Church’s task of evangelisation, as well as topical issues of gender ideology, Christian anthropology and religious freedom. On the last day they discussed the issue of new evangelisation and the operation of doctrinal committees.

The event was hosted by Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Budapest and Esztergom, who is also the head of the Council of European Bishops’Conferences (CCEE).

The doctrinal committees of the European bishops’ conferences were represented by 30 participants.
