Humanitarian crisis developing in conflict zones of Libya

(Vatican Radio) A United Nations human rights report on conflict in recent months in Libya is warning of acute humanitarian conditions for those trapped in areas of fighting.

Listen to the report by correspondent Peter Kenny:

The report issued by the UN Human Rights Office and the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) cites fighting between armed groups in western and eastern Libya, as well as in the south. This has resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths, mass displacement and acute humanitarian conditions for those trapped in conflict zones.

“The report documents indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas, the abduction of civilians, torture and reports of executions, as well as deliberate destruction of property, among other serious abuses and violations of international law in various parts of the country,” said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR).

The report mentions allegations of summary execution by all sides have been reported but are difficult to verify.
