UN pleads for access to vulnerable communities in South Sudan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has pleaded with South Sudan’s warring factions to allow delivery of three hundred and thirty-five thousand metric tons of relief food as well as essentials to different parts of that country.

VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES NEED TO BE REACHED SOON

The UN Coordinator’s office in Juba, said on Monday that they are focussing on key areas where they need to urgently reach vulnerable communities. It is now widely acknowledged that South Sudan is facing the possibility of famine in the coming months and that an estimated 4.1 million people will need relief food by next year.

THERE IS NEED FOR GREATER COLLABORATION TO ALLOW ACCESS

The UN in South Sudan is warning that 2.5 million people, in need of humanitarian assistance, would be “severely food-insecure” if the warring factions do not allow access. The UN Coordinating office has consequently appealed for greater collaboration between NGOs, UN agencies, SPLM rebels and the government of South Sudan.

IT IS ONE YEAR NOW SINCE THE START OF HOSTILITIES

According South Sudan’s CRN, the UN Coordinating office staff were speaking to journalists in Juba on the occasion of 15 December which was observed as the one year since the outbreak of conflict and hostilities.

Close to 2 million people have either been forced out of South Sudan as refugees or are internally displaced.
