The group of protesters used metal barricades and concrete tiles to ram a glass side door of the legislative council building in Hong Kong, a number of them making their way inside.

Riot police, using pepper spray prevented other demonstrators from getting inside the building.

Four arrests were made.

The incident happened hours after authorities cleared some barricades from a small section of a site occupied by pro-democracy activists for more than 50 days. With no headway being made between protesters and the government tensions are running high.

The student led democracy protesters are demanding open nominations in the city's next election for chief executive in 2017.

Beijing has said however, it will allow a free vote, but only for pre-screened candidates.
