Malala donates prize money to rebuild Gaza school

Malala Yousafzai, the 17-year-old Pakistani girl awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year, has donated ‎‎$50,000 from a separate prize to rebuild a United Nations school in the Gaza Strip damaged during this ‎summer’s war between Israel and Hamas, the UN said last week.  The UNRWA, the UN agency that ‎assists Palestinian refugees said that Yousafzai was donating all proceeds of the $50,000 World’s ‎Children’s Prize, which she collected in Stockholm on Wednesday.  The agency quoted her as saying ‎that Palestinian children deserve a quality education, and that “without education, there will never be ‎peace.”  Dozens of the United Nations-run schools in Gaza were damaged or destroyed during the 50-‎day war. Israel says it fired near schools because it was responding to attacks by Hamas, the Islamic ‎militant group, from those areas.  Yousafzai along with child rights advocate and activist, Kailash ‎Sathyarthi of India were jointly awarded the this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.  Yousafzai was honoured ‎for promoting girls’ rights in Pakistan. She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman two years ago, ‎and has since lived in England, where she was taken for treatment.‎ (Source: AP)
