AMECEA Bishops write to Presidents Salva Kiir and Al-Bashir

(Vatican Radio) The Secretary General of the Sudan Catholic Bishops' Conference (SCBC) based in Juba, South Sudan, Fr Jacob Odwa has revealed that the just ended Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) 18th Plenary Assembly of Bishops held in Lilongwe, Malawi has written two letters to the Republican Presidents of Sudan and South Sudan respectively.

The letters from the AMECEA Bishops seek to draw the two Presidents' attention to the worrying situation and suffering of the people due to violence and instability in the Nuba mountains, Dafur and the suffering resulting from the December 2013 political crisis that has engulfed South Sudan.

According to Fr. Odwa, the AMECEA Bishops have urged the two Presidents to work for a peaceful resolution of the violence and suffering being experienced by the people of the two Sudans. The letters to the Presidents are signed by the new AMECEA Chairman, Most Rev. Berhaneyesus Souraphiel, the Archbishop of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. Fr. Odwa revealed this when he spoke to Yanta Daniel Elisha of CRN News in Juba.

It has also emerged that the just concluded AMECEA Plenary Assembly has made an alteration to the frequency of plenary assemblies. Instead of an interval of three years, the plenary assemblies will now be held every four years. According to Fr. Odwa, the next AMECEA Plenary Assembly, in four years time, will now take place in Ethiopia. In the event that Ethiopia can not host the meeting for whatever reason, Tanzania has been chosen as the alternative. The AMECEA Bishops have further expressed their desire to one day hold the AMECEA Plenary Assembly in either Sudan or South Sudan.
