Costa Concordia being towed to Genoa

(Vatican Radio) The largest maritime salvage operation in history entered its final phase on Wednesday, when the Costa Concordia put to sea under tow, en route to Genoa where the relic is to be scrapped.

The wreck of the Costa Concordia liner undertook its final voyage on Wednesday, slowly being towed away from the shores of the island of Giglio off the coast of the Italian region of Tuscany, more than two years after it struck a reef and foundered there, killing 32 people.

The tugboats sounded their sirens, as what remains of the Concordia slipped its erstwhile berth near Giglio's port under their tow, and began what is expected to be a four-day journey – at a projected speed of 2 knots, or little more than a slow walking pace – to the Ligurian port of Genoa on Italy’s northwestern coast, which is home to the ship's owner.
