Mexico authorities rescue kidnapped migrants

(Vatican Radio) Mexican Authorities have rescued more than two hundred kidnapped Central American migrants near the Border with the United States. As James Blears reports it's a stark example of organized crime targeting the vulnerable who are far from home.

Listen:

Mexican Federal Police rescued the migrants during two raids in the State of Tamaulipas, bordering Texas. Mexico's National Anti Kidnapping Coordinator Renato Sales, confirms that nine people were arrested in connection to the kidnappings. And that those rescued included eight children. He said they're Hondurans, Guatemalans, Salvadorians and Cubans, who are now being cared for by Mexico's Natiional Migration Institute.

During the last two days, representatives from the Governmets of the United States, Mexico and Central American Nations, have been meeting in Managua, Nicaragua, to try and formulate a more coordinated and humane approach to cope with regional mass migration northwards. One option being considered is to grant migrants refugee statues.
