Andra Pradesh Bishops launch web network for dalit youth

Some 70 Dalit Christian youth from different dioceses of Coastal Andhra Pradesh participated in the June 28 seminar organised by the Bishops in  Vijaywada.

Indian bishops' office working for dalit and tribal people has launched network of dalit youth to help them share information on jobs, scholarships and other opportunities for progress. At a seminar in Vijayawada, the Catholic Bishops' Conferences of India's (CBCI) office for Dalit and tribal people joined Andhra Pradesh bishops to launch the Dalit Christian Youth Network or DCYouth.net

Some 70 Dalit Christian youth from different dioceses of Coastal Andhra Pradesh participated in the June 28 seminar. Organizers said the net work aims to disseminate information on the different scholarships, fellowships available for higher studies in India and abroad. The information will be given to the youth through the website, e-mail, SMS and social media platforms. The program was launched by Jesuit Father Dusi Ravi, the rector of Andhra Loyola College. Father Devasagayaraj, secretary to the CBCI office for SC/BC explained to the youth the SC status issue of the Dalit Christians.

During the seminar the youth expressed the need for continuous guidance and formation for their advancement. They expressed the need for leadership training and soft skill training to compete and come to the mainstream of life. Father Devasagayaraj said Indian bishops are committed to the cause of Dalits in India who continue to be oppressed.

The CBCI reiterates its resolve to struggle for equal rights of Dalit Christians on par with their counterparts in other religions. He recalled that the last plenary meeting of the bishops early this year stressed to continue the fight against the 1950 Presidential Order, which unjustly discriminates against Dalit Christians.
