Cardinal John Onayekan of Abuja calls upon the government of Nigeria to do more to flee the girls who were abducted by Boko Haram Islamic Militants

The archbishop of Abuja in Nigeria, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has called for concrete action to rescue the over 250 school girls who were abducted last month by Boko Haram Islamic militants. Speaking to Vatican Radio, he expressed disappointment at the slow pace by which the search is taking place. He questioned the security measures by the state to protect people and their property,  noting that the day the girls were abducted the soldiers who were  guarding the town of Chibok where the girl’s school and hostel were located feared to face Boko Haram militants and escaped. He condemned Boko Haram for its lack of respect for human life and human dignity which is visible in the many killings and in the untold suffering they have caused to many people. The Cardinal challenged Boko Haram to release the girls if they still have a sense of human feeling.  Nigerian police have offered a reward of 300,000 US dollars for information leading to the rescue of the girls. Four countries, that is, the United States of America, China, France and Britain have offered to help Nigeria in the search. The United States military said on Wednesday that its experts would help with communications, logistics and intelligence. Britain is providing satellite images, while France is sending security agents. It is not yet known what would be the contribution of China.
