When Our Lady Consoler of the Afflicted wept

(Vatican Radio) Professor of Fine Arts Breda Ennis takes Veronica Scarisbrick into an obscure Church in the heart of Rome known as Santo Stefano del Cacco to admire a painted wooden statue representing Our Lady Consoler of the Afflicted.

A programme produced by Veronica Scarisbrick. Listen: RealAudioMP3

An elaborate sculpture said to be miraculous in which Our Lady holds a standing Baby Jesus in one hand, a sceptre in the other and is decked out with elaborate silk bejewelled robes. One that is linked to the entry of Napoleon into Rome when legend has it tears rolled down its cheeks in sorrow to mark this dramatic chapter in the city's history.
