Pope Francis on Tuesday (15.04.14) accepted the resignation from the pastoral care
of the Diocese of Kasese in Uganda presented by Bishop Egidio Nkaijanabwo. The bishop
resigned upon having reached the age limit set by the Code of Canon Law for holding
that office.
Meanwhile, Pope Francis has named the Rector of St. Paul’s National Seminary Kinyamasika
at Fort Portal, Fr. Acquirino Francis Kibira as the new bishop of Kasese Diocese.
The bishop-elect was born on 16 April 1958. He was ordained a priest on 23 September
1984 and incardinated in his home diocese of Fort Portal.
The Diocese of Kasese was created in 1989 and is the Archdiocese Mbarara in Western
Uganda. It has a population 610,000, of which over 290.000 are Catholics.
The diocese has 16 parishes, served by 37 diocesan and 2 religious priests, alongside
31 religious brothers, 35 sisters and 49 seminarians.
