Catholics in Angola mourning the death of Archbishop Franklin
The catholic faithful in Angola are mourning the death of Archbishop Damião Franklin.
The Archbishop of Luanda passed away on Monday (28 April) in a hospital in South
Africa where he had been receiving treatment. He was 63. Archbishop Franklin was born
in Cabinda, Angola on 6th August 1950 and was ordained a priest in June 1978. He
was appointed Auxiliary bishop of Luanda in May 1992 and as Archbishop of Luanda on
23 January 2001.
Archbishop Franklin was a strong campaigner against corruption and advocated for free
and fair elections in his country.
Among others, he served as President of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and the
island nation of São Tomé and Principe and as a secretary to Cardinal Peter Turkson
at the Second African Synod held in October 2009.
