New Bishop appointed to Motherwell, Scotland


(Vatican Radio) The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Joseph Anthony Toal as Bishop of Motherwell (Scotland) transferring him from the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles .

Bishop Joseph Anthony Toal was born in Roy Bridge, Inverness -shire, in the diocese of Argyll and The Isles, Scotland, on October 13, 1956. He undertook ecclesiastical studies at the seminaries of St. Vincent College (Langbank) and St. Mary's College ( Blair ) in Aberdeen. He then studied theology at the Royal Scots College in Valladolid, earning his Bachelor's Degree from the Pontifical University di Comillas in Madrid.

He was ordained a priest in St. Columba 's Cathedral in Oban, for the Diocese of Argyll and The Isles, on July 10, 1980 .

From 1981 to 1983 he was assistant priest in the parish of St. Peter's of Daliburgh and, until 1986 , Professor at the minor seminary of Blairs. From 1986-1999 he was the first pastor of the parish of St. Michael's , Ardkenneth, South Uist. Later he served at St. Kieran's, Campbeltown, and finally at St. Mary's, Benbecula.

From 1999 to 2008 he served at the Royal Scots College in Salamanca, where he was first Spiritual Director , then Vice-Chancellor and finally Rector. On March 24, 2007 he was appointed Prelate of Honour of His Holiness.

On October 16, 2008 he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles. He received episcopal consecration on 8 December of the same year.
