Pope’s tweet says faith helps in fighting pessimism
April 25, 2014 - In a post on the social media this Easter week, Pope Francis on
Friday urged Christians to overcome pessimism with faith. “We must not let ourselves
fall into the vortex of pessimism. Faith can move mountains!” he urged in his tweet
on his Twitter account @pontifex. The exhortation is very much in keeping with the
Eastertide message of the light of the Risen Christ dispelling the darkness of sin,
doubt and pessimism. The message is also in tune with the life and spirituality
of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II, who are to be declared saints on Sunday, here
in the Vatican. In his inaugural speech at the start of the Second Vatican Council
in 1962, the upbeat John XXIII refused to be overcome by pessimism saying, “We feel
that We must disagree with these prophets of doom, who are always forecasting worse
disasters, as though the end of the world were at hand.”
