Pope Francis: Mass of thanksgiving for Jesuit missionary saint
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving for the elevation of
Bl. José de Anchieta, SJ, to the roll of the saints. Earlier this month, Pope Francis
dispensed with the usual canonical process and included the great 16th
century Jesuit missionary to Brazil in the Church’s universal calendar.
St
José de Anchieta’s Feast Day is June 9th.
Pope Francis celebrated
the Mass at the church of St. Ignatius Loyola, and delivered the homily, in which
he praised his sainted confrere as one who, “knew how to communicate that, which he
had experienced with the Lord – that which he had seen and heard from Him,” in order
to fill others with the happiness that comes with knowing and being brought to love
the truth. “[St. José de Anchieta],” said Pope Francis, “was not afraid of joy.” Listen:
