(Vatican Radio) Seismologists and volcanologists are monitoring the aftershocks of
a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, which rocked and swayed Mexico City for a full two minutes.
The
sheer duration of this quake, as much as its power is noteworthy. And after the two
minutes had subsided aftershocks started. Experts have so far measured more than seventy.
The quake drove thousands on to the streets of Mexico City, having reached the Capitol
just seconds from its epicenter in the South Western State of Guerrero, on the other
side of the country. Structural damage to a hospital in the State Capitol Chilpancingo
and in Petatlan as well as the in international vacation resort of Zihuatanejo has
been reported.
Mexico City was hit by even larger earthquakes in 1911, 1957
and 1985. The 85 massive 8.1 magnitude quake devastated downtown Mexico City, killing
thousands. The experts explain that the mega quakes come within 50 year cycles. This
one wasn't on that scale, but, sooner rather than later, come it will.
