Pope Francis to the Oncological Surgeons: we are a unity of body and spirit
April 12, 2014: Scientific research has multiplied the possibilities of prevention
and treatment of diseases , said Pope Francis in his welcome address to the Italian
Society of Oncological Surgery. Because we can talk about full health one must
not lose sight of the human person created in the image and likeness of God. We are
a unity of body and spirit. These two elements can be distinguished but not separated
. So even the disease , the experience of pain and suffering, not only affect the
body , but the man in his totality. Hence the need for a comprehensive care that
considers the whole person , his human, psychological and social aspects and spiritual
guidance and support to the relatives of the patient. Therefore, it is essential that
health care providers implement a fully human approach to the patient who suffers
" he said. He also said, “ tomorrow begins the Holy Week, which culminates in
the Triduum of the Passion , Death and Resurrection of Jesus. And urged them to
draw inspiration from the crucified and risen Lord.
