2014 World Health Day: Focus on diseases carried by insects
(Vatican Radio) More than half of the world’s population is at risk of from diseases
coming from insects, bugs, and other small animals; And increased travel, trade and
migration make even more people vulnerable.
These “Vectors-borne diseases”
are often preventable by simple measures that include sleeping under a bednet, wearing
a long-sleeved shirt and trousers and using insect repellent. Despite how inexpensive
prevention measures are, these diseases disproportionately impact the world’s poorest
people.
That is why they are the focus of the 2014 World Health Day, observed
on April 7th.
“These are deadly but preventable diseases," said
Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director for the World Health Organisation for
South-East Asia. “The solution lies in a united and sustained effort from all of us.”
