IFAD President on the scandal of food waste

(Vatican Radio) 2014 marks the United Nations International Year of Family Farming. The aim of the year is to recognize the importance of family farming in reducing poverty and improving global food security.
In an interview with Vatican Radio the President of The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Kanayo Nwanze discusses this year, the Millenium Development Goals, and the Zero Hunger Campaign.
The President also recalls Pope Francis’ words food waste.
In an address on World Food Day 2013 the Holy Father said "This waste of food," he continued, "is one of the results of our throw-away culture that often leads to the sacrifice of men and women before the idols of profit and consumerism."Mr Nwanze says, "We all say that today we can feed 7.1 billion from the food data produce globally. But it's a question of access availability of the food, particularly in rural areas and countries that are affected by serious climate events. So, Pope Francis, I believe, brings to the UN agencies in Rome the need for us to consider our common humanity. I personally think it is obscene, it is not acceptable, that 1 billion people continues to suffer from malnutrition, 800 hundred million suffer from stunting, 1 billion suffer from obesity, so, you see, these kind of contradiction in the world. (The message of Pope Francis) brings to the UN agencies that our work that we do is also like a missionary work, bringing happiness to poor people, help to build their own capacities, to move away from poverty, from hunger, to move away from subsistence agriculture and commercialize their supplies and to be able to feed themselves and feed their families".
