Feb.19,2014: Pope Francis appealed fervently for peace in the Ukraine saying he was
very preoccupied with what is happening in Kiev. The Pope made the appeal at the
end of Wednesday’s weekly general audience in St. Peter’s square. The Holy Father
expressed his nearness to the people of Ukraine and his prayers for the victims of
violence, the wounded and suffering and their families. The Pope called on all the
parties in conflict to seek harmony and peace in the country. Meanwhile, police
in the Ukrainian capital launched a fresh attack on Wednesday on anti-Government protestors,
as the death toll in renewed clashes climbed to 25. The new attempt to uproot the
protest stronghold came as President Viktor Yanukovych blamed opposition leaders for
the worst violence in months of unrest. After failed overnight talks on Tuesday, he
urged them to distance themselves from radical forces. The protests began in late
November when President Yanukovych rejected a landmark association and trade deal
with the European Union (EU) in favour of closer ties with Russia. Source: Sedoc
