Jan. 22, 2014: Pope Francis on Wednesday expressed his closeness with the world’s
seafarers and fisher folk, urging Church workers to speak out for them. “ I greet
the participants in the meeting of regional coordinators of the Apostleship of the
Sea with Cardinal Antonio Maria Vegliò, exhorting them to be the voice of the workers
who live far from their dear ones and face dangerous and difficult situations”, the
Pope said speaking in Italian during his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square.
The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care if Migrants & Itinerant
People, headed by Cardinal Vegliò, is currently holding the annual meeting of regional
Coordinators of the Apostleship of the Sea in Rome, Jan. 20-24. The Apostleship
of the Sea is the Catholic Church’s pastoral care for seafarers and fisher folk, which
is carried out mainly through the so-called “Stella Maris” centres at ports. The apostolate
