Pope warns Christians against selling their dignity as God’s children

January 17, 2013 - Pope Francis on Friday warned Christians against the temptation of “selling” their dignity of being God’s children in order to feel ‘normal’ and fashionable. Thus they forget the Word of God and follow their own desires, said the Pope in his homily at his morning Mass in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta residence in the Vatican. He took his cue from the Mass reading from the First Book of Samuel where the Jewish people were demanding for a king "like all other nations." The Holy Father noted, "they reject the Lord of love”, their being His chosen people and seek the path of worldliness", of "worldly uniformity". This, the Pope said, is the temptation of the people, and ours also. Many times, we forget the Word of God, what the Lord tells us, and choose what is fashionable. For us what the soap opera advertises is more fashionable and fun. Clearly, this breaking with the Lord is pure apostasy, the Pope pointed out, warning, “this worldliness is even more dangerous, because it very subtle". He agreed that a Christian must be normal, but he must hold on to his dignity of being the child of God without giving in to "a certain inferiority complex" of feeling abnormal.
