Twenty-two Catholic pastoral workers killed in 2013


January 03, 2014 - In the year just ended, 22 pastoral workers, mostly priests have been killed worldwide in the Catholic Church. The Vatican’s missionary news agency, Fides released the tally for 2013, saying the figure is almost double that of the previous year with 13 killed. For the 5th consecutive year Latin America continues to head the list with 15 killed, and Colombia alone accounting for 7 murders. In Asia, a priest was killed in India, another in Syria and a layman in the Philippines. Africa and Europe had 3 and one killed during the past year. The latest tragedy occurred between the night of Dec. 30 and 31, when US priest Fr. Eric Freed, parish priest of Eureka, California, was found murdered inside his car. (Source: Fides)
