(Vatican Radio) Officials in Mexico City say a gun amnesty has collected more than
9,500 firearms plus 70,000 bullets. The yearlong campaign, called "For your family,
disarm" has been coordinated by the Church, Mexico City officials and the national
Ministry of Defence.
In addition to real firearms, more than 16,000 toy guns
have been handed in. In return, for this no-questions-asked initiative, participants
have been given cash, computer equipment, bicycles or less aggressive toys as compensation.
To date, the capitol and its heartland have been spared the worst ravages of the
nation's drug war, which is approaching its eighth year.
