Pope stresses on ‘culture of encounter’ with Italian protocol officials
December 20, 2013 - Pope Francis on Friday received in audience a delegation of officials
from the Italian government’s protocol department, as well as those from Italy’s
embassy to the Holy See, who came to wish him for Christmas. Addressing the group
of some 200, the Pope thanked them for their work and help when leaders, representatives
and diplomats from around the world had converge on Rome for the inauguration of his
pontificate six days after his March 13 election. He reminded the group that their
work puts them in a situation that fosters a ‘culture of encounter’. He said their
important service helps representatives of nations, international organizations and
institutions meet one another in a fruitful way, contributing to the growth of positive
relations, based on reciprocal acquaintance, respect and the common search for ways
to development and peace. Pope Francis noted that even someone who is not a Christian,
is confronted with the message of the birth of Jesus, who in Himself realizes this
encounter to the full. The Pope expressed appreciation for Italy’s cultural heritage,
art and civilization as an added advantage to help contribute to the culture of encounter.
