Cardinal Cormac: Exhortation reflects Franciscan love of the poor
(Vatican Radio) How does the new papal document ‘Evangelii Gaudium’ or ‘The Joy of
the Gospel’ showcase Pope Francis’ priority of a ‘poor Church for the poor’? How
does it reach out beyond the boundaries of the Catholic Church to other Christians
and people of different faith traditions? And how has it been received by people within
secular British society? Those were just a few of the questions that Philippa Hitchen
put to English Cardinal and emeritus Archbishop of Westminster Cormac Murphy-O’Connor:
Listen:
“What comes
through above all is a Franciscan love for the poor and a call to the world – the
Catholic and Christian world, but also to politicians and moneyed people – to say
you must think again about how you organize the world’s good in favour of the poor. At
the heart of this wonderful document…is a call for conversion, within the Church –
and he admits his own role as Pope needs to be re-evaluated – in the Vatican and everywhere…..he’s
calling on us all to have that evangelical approach, like Jesus, with a love for the
poor…..
